Jyotish, which is also known as Vedic astrology, is derived from two words "Jyoti" being light and "isha" being lord. Jyotish thus means "the Lord of Light" or "the Knowledge of Light". Modern science now confirms that all matter in the universe based upon light and its interplays, which would make Jyotish "the science of light". Jyotish is considered to be one of the Vedangas (part of Vedas) propounded by Lord Brahma, by the scientific study of which human beings can accomplish virtue. The current form of Vedic Astrology was written by Maharishi Parashara thousands of years ago. He is known as the father of mainstream Jyotisha and his book; "Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra" is viewed as the essential primer. Jyotish is a compilation of 4,00,000 verses (vide Narada Purana, II.50.2). It has mainly three branches - Siddhanta (the principle), Jataka or Hora (astrology for individuals) and Samhita (astrology for masses).
